My eyes literally bugged out when I saw the marquee announcement scrolling across the screen as I was watching Beauty and the Geek last night on ETC. I really really really want to join but I’m too suspicious as it will be another local adaptation of a foreign reality series. As I was envisioning how I will do my 3-minute video audition for the show, the calculating Libran in me unearthed visions of past *failed* local versions of foreign shows.. and it wasn’t pretty.

Hopeful contestants need to ready their portfolios and send in a 3 to 5-minute video of themselves talking about their design philosophy and showing their work and workroom. Deadline would be this 15th October. That’s sounds fine and all but I cannot forget about how Ruffa Gutierrez was the nearest we have to a Tyra Banks in the local version of America’s Next Top Model (Philippine’s Next Top Model). To say that the local version paled in comparison to its Western counterpart would be praising it.

I guess I’ll just wait and see how ABS-CBN will handle the show and try out for the next season if after watching the first, I don’t find myself cringing at every almost-but-not-quite thing they do like what happens everytime Edu said “Goodbye” in the Weakest Link Philippines . Who will be their Heidi, the supermodel host who has lived, breathed and perspired the best fashions in the world? Who will be their Tim Gunn, the coach/Chair of the Department of Fashion Design in Parsons who knows fashion so well, he can rightfully guide these designers? And what will be their Parsons, the fashion school/work area? Will they have appropriate machines? What will be their Mood, the awesome fabric store? And what could be their prize of Olympus Fashion Week, $100,000 and Saturn convertible- a show on the Philippine Fashion Week (yes, there is such a thing), 100,000 pesos cash to start up the winner’s line and a what, Honda Miata?

I’m just going to let them do their thing and watch before I get myself into something I might regret. And anyway, I have classes. Lol.

Hmm.. I wonder, will the host say “Auf Wiedersehen” too or something ridiculous like (God forbid) “Paalam?”

    1. Oh wow… Project Runway Philippines!?!?! I hope it doesn’t flop too. My sister and I were trying to think of people– models/designers/fashionistas who have exceptional taste in fashion and can host. We had a hard time thinking of potential ‘Heidi Klum’s… haha. So we decided Tessa Prieto-valdes would do fine. At least she has spunk and would definitely add life to the show!

Luv your blog… I see the girl in the header is holding a Green Tea Frapp is it? Haha. I’m addicted to Green Tea frapp! Anything Green Tea really. :)

    2. so sino magiging tim gunn ng pinas? sino magiging heidi klum?

    3. I love this post. You’re an awesome blogger!

get your facts straight! its ETC or ENTERTAINMENT CENTRAL will be airing this show on Philippine television! not ABS CBN!

project runway philippines will be aired on ETC… i think sometime in July…
      i’m so excited…..

By now the country’s fashion set knows that Project Runway Philippines will air soon on ETC. I heard Veejay Floresca and Aries Lagat made it to the roster of 14.

I am anticipating that this would be way better than the local franchise of Top Model since ETC would be handling it (not the defunct RPN which probably had a good audience share only during the Oscars and Miss Universe airings).

With all due respect, however, Crichi, I think that the more important question - besides the who’s and the what’s - would be, “how would the show be able to fully showcase Filipino talent and ingenuity sans the hype?” It would be easy to pick a brilliant model host, a Pinoy Fashion genius equivalent to Tim Gunn, and a really good group of local fashion insiders to make up the set of judges but the task of providing a credible show which would present genuine global pinoy artistry while keeping the viewers glued to the show is most daunting.

(By the way, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Honda Miata)

hi! i googled project runway philippines and somehow got into your website, i also saw the teaser they had in ETC, it also came to me as a shock, i’ve always told myself if ever i would be in a reality show it would be project runway! ever since i saw jay mccaroll from project runway season 1 create that chrysler building inspired banana republic holiday dress i got inspired to pursue what i have been sooo passionate about. im more into costume designing though, i really dreamed of making it big in hollywood with the likes of patricia field from sex and the city. i really wanted to get to know people who share the same interest as mine, i really love the sixties, thats how i would describe my style, i love the classic feminine dress ala stepford wives! how about you? hope we can be acquainted! i also want to try auditioning for the show but i missed the casting call, anyway i think it is really not the time, i need to improve my portfolio and polish my sewing skills!hehehe! anywho, i really look forward to chatting with you! au revoir!

Oh dear lord! Another adaptation or say— unethically copied idea from a foreign entertainment show. Although Project Runway Philippines is a great way to boost the country’s reputation in the world of fashion per se and to encourage aspiring designers to participate, it is still quite absurd and a repulsive idea to imitate a show that seemed highly professional compared to Philippine standards. I am aware that I sound degrading and pessimistic about it, however it is quite true that Filipino’s creativity is reflected on its imitation to Philippines’ Next Top Model because it does not reveal the distinct ideas and profound creativity of Pinoys, but rather it demeans Filipinos as copy-cats, lost for their true entities and whole-heartedly embracing clichés and replicating original work.

Although I am aware that Brit and Aussi have copied America’s Next Top Model, I think it was still unoriginal, yet they handled the show as professional as the Americans’. I am aggravated by the idea that Project Runway—the holiest of the holy- will be re-produced and might be butchered and distorted to the mere-imitation of Christian Siriano’s artistic-snobbish style, or that of Heidi Klum’s eloquence and poise. My expectations are high, I definitely hope that the Pinoys could carry it through with a twist of fresh ideas.

So what’s next after Phils’ Project Runway? Philippines’ Best Dance Crew? My God, why didn’t they change the title instead and carried on with the details?

Oh by the way, Helios do have a point. Did they ever consider the audience’s taste? Most Filipinos would care less about fashion since the economy at large is in a great state of economic catastrophe and failure. Yeah some would love to see how the designers will create their masterpiece and vote for their favorites, but why on earth would you waste your money to vote for someone who can’t ever entertain you again after the show? Oh lord, i love fashion but this seemed completely pointless and an absolute waste.
